Sheltered housing

Norwich City Council currently manages 28 sheltered housing schemes across the city, providing approximately 1000 homes for older people.

The sheltered housing schemes are made up of groups of flats or bungalows specially designed for people over the age of 60 who are able to live independently, but who would benefit from additional security and support.

  • A 24 hour emergency alarm system that links to NCAS (Norwich Community Alarm Service).

  • Access to a dedicated Support Worker team, who will complete a support plan with you to agree the level of support you need.

  • A dedicated Sheltered Housing Officer team who will provide housing management and tenancy advice
communal facilities such as a lounge, kitchen and laundry available on most schemes.

  • An opportunity to join in, or help to plan, a range of social activities and events.

  • Guest room where family or friends may stay for a small charge.

A scheme facilities guide is available which tells you more about services and facilities found at each scheme. This is currently being updated and should be available soon.

Cost

In addition to the basic rent charges residents pay:
  • a support charge – this covers the cost of the support services
  • a service charge – this covers the cost of the communal facilities.

If you are receiving housing benefit, you may be able to get help with paying these charges. Find out more about benefits.

Consultation and Involvement

The Sheltered Housing Tenant's Forum (SHTF)

The role of the SHTF is to represent all tenants living in sheltered housing, and ensure they are involved and consulted, about issues that affect them.

The SHTF will represent tenants' views, and challenge the council and other organisations such as Health and Adult Social Services, on key services and policies that impact on the lives older people living in Norwich.

If you are a sheltered housing tenant and want to get involved with the SHTF, please contact Brent Pearson (forum support) on 01603 213698 or notify your sheltered housing officer.
