The £2.5 million Lady Julian Bridge opened up a valuable link between the Riverside development and King Street.

Norwich City Council worked with the Norfolk Strategic Partnership – May Gurney, Mott MacDonald and Norfolk County Council – to deliver the project. Developer City Living agreed to allow a link to the bridge through the St Anne’s Wharf site.

Members of the public were invited to submit their thoughts on what it could be called - and win a chance to formally open the bridge at the completion ceremony, planned for 15 September.

More than 200 people took part, and joint winners Sister Violet and Sister Pamela of the Convent of All Hallows opened the foot and cycle bridge on 15 September 2009.

The bridge can swing open to allow tall vessels to pass, but is high enough to let most river traffic through.

The bridge was funded with £730,000 from the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), £1.7 million secured by Norwich City Council through section 106 developer contributions from the City Living Developments Riverside scheme, and a grant of £70,000 from the Greater Norwich Development Partnership (GNDP).
