Gritting routes
Norfolk County Council is responsible for gritting roads in Norwich as well as major roads throughout the county. Norwich City Council is responsible for putting out the grit bins in Norwich and refilling them.
Grit bins
There are 285 grit bins located on the city roads, which contain a mixture of salt and sand. They are usually located on highway slopes. The link below illustrates and lists all the highway grit bins in Norwich for winter 2012-13:

Please be sparing in the use of the grit bin material. It should only take 40 grams (about 1 tablespoon) to treat a square metre. Too much grit can cause braking and slipping problems.
It is usually possible, depending on the weather conditions, to carry out precautionary gritting of the treated road network and city centre footways. However, there are certain weather conditions, such as rain turning to snow, when ice can form even on the treated road network. Extra care should be taken during winter weather even if a road or footway has been treated with salt or brine.

We aim to refill grit bins by the end of the third day after the request has been received..
