Norwich's highway network - roads and footpaths - is inspected by three highways inspectors. The main network is inspected once a month by car and the condition and any defects are recorded using a data capture device. The city centre is also inspected once a month but on foot. The majority of the remaining network is inspected four times a year.
Parts of the network that need repair are prioritised in order of importance:
- Emergency works are attended to within two hours and repaired or made safe.
- Urgent repairs are attended to within 24 hours.
- A normal repair period is four weeks.
- Programmed works are incorporated into a rolling programme of repairs.
Programmes of repairs are generally prepared on a 'worst first' basis although we make allowance for the type of use of the road or footpath. So, if a footpath is near a school, hospital or sheltered housing scheme, for instance, it will be seen as more important.
As the Highway Authority, Norfolk County Council provides the funds for repairs.
