Norwich has formal twinning links with four towns and cities worldwide.
The idea of forming links with other communities through twinning was first proposed after WWII. It was seen as a way of spreading understanding of different cultures with the ultimate aim of lessening the risk of future world conflict.
Today, towns and cities form trading links and make regular exchange visits.

Norwich and Norfolk World Family
As well as formal twinning links, the city of Norwich and the county of Norfolk are also part of a much larger world family of 58 towns and cities around the globe that all share the same city or county name.
Two plaques are displayed in Norwich (England) to celebrate the links and list all the current known family members. Then Lord Mayor, Michael Banham unveiled one plaque in City Hall and the other was unveiled by then Norfolk County council chairman, John Baskerville in the main reception at County Hall, Martineau Lane.
The Norwich and Norfolk World Family was set up by Derek Bickford-Smith who lives in Norwich, England. He has written a book about the places called Norwich and Norfolk that he has visited across the world. You can purchase the book from Jarrolds, London Street, Norwich, England or direct from the author dimsmith@netcom.co.uk (£8.00 plus P&P).
