Food waste collection scheme

Norwich City Council has introduced a weekly food waste collection service so you can recycle even more from your home.

About the scheme

The new food waste collection service is the only one in the county available as a standard, ongoing service (rather than a trial), and will collect all food waste from the home, including leftovers from meals, food that has gone past its use by date, and any other food waste from your kitchen. It is an extra service to those currently operating in the city.

This weekly collection service will help the city to slash the amount we send to landfill, making Norwich a cleaner, safer, and more eco-friendly place.

Who can use it?

Everyone who has their own wheelie bin automatically receives this new service, as well as many people who currently only have black sacks for their household waste.

This is an extra service to those that you already receive. Food waste collections will be weekly, on the same day as your recycling or waste wheelie bins are collected, making the service simple for everyone.

Recycling credits

Norfolk County Council pays recycling credits to Norfolk district, borough and city councils, charities and voluntary groups as a direct financial incentive to encourage more recycling and reduce the amount of rubbish we send to landfill. A higher-rate recycling credit, specifically for food waste, supports Norwich City Council’s food waste collection service.

More food waste collection schemes in our county could lead to future development of new waste treatment technology in Norfolk, helping to develop a network of facilities to generate power and heat from our waste, reducing costs and our dependence on fossil fuels, helping us tackle climate change.

Visit Norfolk County Council's website for further informtion about recycling credits and recycling technology, or call 0344 800 8004.
