There are no open landfill facilities in Norwich but there is one closed site - Lakenham Common, formerly known as Harford Tip. This was the main domestic refuse tip for Norwich from the 1930s until it was closed in the late 1970s. Since it was closed the site has been capped and is regularly monitored for the emission of landfill gases.
Many other areas in Norwich have been excavated in the past for sand, gravel, chalk and flints. Most of these old pits have been filled in as Norwich has developed over the years. Unfortunately, there are no records of the materials used to fill the pits.
Waste disposal is the responsibility of Norfolk County Council. Norwich City Council, together with the District Councils in Norfolk work together in the Norfolk Waste Partnership. Details can be found on the Norfolk County Council website, below.
