Wheelie bins are collected from the edge of your property.
The collection crews cannot take waste that is not suitably contained. Please make sure that all bags in the bin are tied up and that the bin is not overflowing.
Failure to comply with the above procedure for collection could result in a fixed penalty notice of £80 being issued.
Please note that garden waste will not be collected as part of your general waste.
Important information
- Please make sure that your bin is left out by 7am on your collection day — if you do leave it out the night before, please don't leave it out before 6pm.
- Please make sure that you return your bin to the inside of your property boundary by 9am the day after your scheduled collection.
Make a note of any changes to your collection day - your waste may not be collected on the same day as it always has, and changes may particularly occur around bank holidays and other public holidays.
Please remember we will not collect bins that:
- have the wrong rubbish in them - see the front of your collection calendar to find out what goes in which bin
- have lids which are not fully closed as the bin is over flowing with rubbish
- are too heavy - bins that are too heavy can cause damage to our collection vehicles and be dangerous for the public and our collection crews. The limit is 80kg, but we understand it is difficult to weigh your bin, so the general rule is that if our crews can't move the bin safely then they will not collect it.
If you have sacks rather than wheelie bins these will be collected weekly from the edge of your property.
Please place the black sacks out by 7am on collection day, and no earlier than 6pm the evening before. We will provide you with a supply of sacks. You can order a tuff tub or wheelie bin to store your sacks in between collections.
Failure to comply with the above procedure for collection could result in a fixed penalty notice being issued.
The crews cannot take waste that is not suitably contained. Please make sure that all your bags are tied. To order a tuff tub for your waste please call us on 0344 980 3333.
Missed bin collections must be reported within 48 hours of your collection day. You can do this by:
If you report a missed bin collection after this time it will not be picked up until your next collection date.
It is illegal and dangerous to put liquid waste, hazardous or sharp items in your household waste.
You can contact the council's customer team on 0344 980 3333 or email info@norwich.gov.uk to arrange to have garden chemicals or similar liquid waste collected. Arrangements will be made through a specialist company who will contact you with collection dates and times.
Engine oil and batteries are accepted at the recycling centre at Swanton Road, Mile Cross. Find out information about other items that can also be taken.
Broken glass should be well wrapped before placing in the wheelie bin or sack and never placed in green boxes for recyling.
Sharps or needles from the home should be disposed of as clinical waste.
On request, the local authority can collect them but a charge may be made for this. It is the normal practice of Norwich City Council to ask people to use the NHS for sharps disposal needs.
This is waste usually associated with medical needs like wound dressings and incontinence pads. If treatment has been prescribed, you or your surgery/hospital will need to make arrangements for proper disposal.
Please contact the customer contact team on 0344 980 3333 or email info@norwich.gov.uk to make arrangements for collection in other circumstances.
Home and garden DIY waste
One way to get rid of this waste is to hire a skip — you will have to contact a skip merchant which you will find in the yellow pages.
A DIY waste disposal scheme is run at the household waste recycling centre at Swanton Road. You are able to take one bag of builders waste to the site per week.
Visit the Norfolk County Council website for further information about home DIY waste disposal.
DIY waste cannot be put in your household bins. This kind of waste must be disposed of properly. We cannot collect bins that are too heavy as they are unsafe for the crews to handle and can also cause damage to the bin lift mechanism on the collection vehicles.
