What is equality and diversity?

Celebrating diversity acknowledges that people are different but equal, with a variety of contributions and enrichment to culture and society. Diversity awareness seeks to show how this may mean that sometimes people require different services, and that some face barriers in accessing those services and participating in the community.

Equalities duties ensure that individuals have the right to protection from discrimination, it means that fairness and equality of opportunity are at the heart of public sector functions and that differing needs are taken into account when providing services.

Norwich City Council is committed to promoting equal of opportunity in delivering services and as an employer. We believe in fairness in the treatment of service users and our staff in providing access to services. We value and celebrate the diversity that exists amongst both the citizens of Norwich and our workforce. The council encourages job applications from all members of the public. Our recruitment and employment practices are designed to be fair and inclusive.

As a council we want to ensure that everyone can fully participate in the social, cultural, political and economic life of the city. We recognise and oppose direct discrimination and indirect discrimination which creates barriers to achieving equality for our residents.
