Don’t miss out on your Moment to Shine

14/06/2011

As part of the Olympic celebrations next year, 2,012 people will have the chance to carry the Olympic Flame on a leg of its historic journey across the UK.

The LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games) ‘Moment to Shine’ public nomination campaign will see inspirational individuals take part in the torch relay in the run up to the Games’ opening ceremony on 27 July 2012.

There is no particular person, or story, in mind - LOCOG wants to see who’s out there.

It might be a friend who gave up a lot to help you through a really hard time.

A local football coach, out on the touchline every week, encouraging their team come rain or shine.

A youth worker who runs a music project to give confidence to children in deprived areas.

Or someone who gives time every evening to help elderly or disabled people get around.

These are just some of the hundreds of thousands of stories that are out there. We all know someone who gives their all - and inspires others as they do so. Let's give them their moment to shine.

There are just over two weeks left to get your nominations in - so don’t miss out!

Councillor Brenda Arthur, leader of Norwich City Council, said: "Each and every torchbearer in this leg of the relay will represent the city and county. There will be some truly inspirational stories to tell that will really showcase the strength of our communities.

"I would urge as many people as possible to nominate someone in their community who goes the extra mile to make a positive difference, so they get their moment to shine during this historic event."

Young people in particular are encouraged to get involved, with half of the Torchbearer places expected to go to people aged between 12 and 24 years of age who are considered leading lights in their local communities.

The LOCOG ‘Moment to Shine’ nomination portal asks nominators for up to 150 words on why their nominee should carry the Olympic Flame. The deadline to nominate potential Torchbearers is 11.59pm on Wednesday 29 June 2011.

If you would like to nominate a leading light in your community, please nominate them at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay
