Entries open for city's biggest street party

09/01/2012
An invitation has gone out across the city for individuals and organisations to participate in Norwich’s biggest annual street party.

The jewel in the crown of the Lord Mayor’s celebration weekend, the street procession is one of the most hotly-anticipated events of the summer.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday 7 July starting at 5pm and, to celebrate the Olympics coming back to Britain for the first time in 64 years, the theme will be an Olympic one.

Every year the carnival procession includes dozens of colourful and creative floats accompanied by walking and performance groups. It is enjoyed by thousands of people lining the streets and by the schools, community groups and businesses who all get involved to raise money for charity and enjoy the fun.

Brenda Arthur, leader of Norwich City Council and cabinet member for culture, said: “The call is out for as many people as possible to be a part of this year’s procession.

“Last year’s event was fantastic and it would be lovely to see some of those participants involved again this year, as well as encouraging new organisations and groups to join in with the carnival spirit.”

Last year’s event saw dancers, dinosaurs, a samba band, baton twirlers, pirates and Star Wars characters, to name but a few, taking to the streets on foot and on board dozens of giant elaborate floats.

The city will see more fun and festivities than ever this year as the Olympic Torch Relay will visit Norwich just a few days before. The Relay will reach the city on Wednesday 4 July and an evening celebration will be held at Chapelfield Gardens. The celebrations will then continue into the Lord Mayor’s weekend on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July.

For more information on the procession and how to enter, please visit the events page where you can find the application form along with some guidance notes. The team will also be happy to discuss ideas or answer any questions. Call 01603 212136 to contact them. The closing date for entries is Tuesday 12 June.
