The final call is out for one of the city's best-known eco awards ceremonies.

Schools, community groups and local businesses have been submitting their entries over the last few weeks but there is still time for any organisations who have undertaken an environmentally-friendly project over the last year.

Projects including litter picking, recycling, and energy-saving to name but a few are all eligible for recognition as part of the fourth annual Norwich City Council Eco awards.

Bert Bremner, cabinet member with responsibility for the environment, said: “The application process is very short. It only takes a small amount of time to complete the form and the rewards of recognition through this scheme are well worth the effort.”

All entrants will be invited to a ceremony at City Hall held by the Lord Mayor of Norwich and will receive a certificate.

Winners will receive a glass trophy and the right to use the well-known eco awards branding featuring their specific details on marketing materials and letters for the forthcoming year.

Among the applications already received is an entry from Eaton Hall Specialist College, which is a residential boys’ school for youngsters aged from nine to 16 with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. The school is part of the Eco schools programme, has a dedicated recycling team and has been involved in initiatives to encourage walking and cycling. Students have also been involved in conservation work around the city.

An entry by FresHair Beauty and Barbers in Avenue Road has also proven impressive. The small business has been engaged in a range of eco-friendly endeavours including using the eco-friendly hairdryers, not using aerosols in the salon, and using organic colour products, paraben-free shampoos and eco-friendly cleaning products. Owner Sue Helps was inspired after, during a successful battle against breast cancer, tumours found in her body contained high levels of chemical build-up.

If your organisation is interested in the entering the eco awards, there are four different categories, which are:
  • eco school
  • eco community group
  • eco small business (less than 50 staff)
  • eco large business (more than 50 staff).

Supported by the Norwich Evening News, the awards are due to be held on Thursday 1 March and the closing date for entries is Friday 27 January.

Anyone interested in applying can do so using the entry form on our eco awards webpage. Alternatively you can call environmental strategy officer Claire Tullett on 01603 212545 or email clairetullett@norwich.gov.uk

Please note that the awards are only open to organisations based within the Norwich City Council area.
