Local sporting personalities are pledging their support for Sport Relief 2012 and are encouraging people across Norwich to do the same.

The event is due to come to Norwich once again on Sunday 25 March and will set the stage for the city's biggest ever year of sport.

Norfolk's fencing multiple medal winner Connie Adam, 84, who is a keen supporter of the benefits of sport for all ages, will be cheering on participants on the day. And former 10,000 metre Olympic finalist and top marathon runner Paul Evans, who now works for the county's sports partnership Active Norfolk, has also shown his enthusiasm for the event.

Mr Evans said: “I am happy to be supporting Sport Relief 2012. It’s a great way of getting the whole community active, and raising money for great causes. With this being the Olympic year, I am sure it will make this an even greater occasion.”

Leader of Norwich City Council and cabinet member with responsibility for culture and sport, Brenda Arthur, is backing Sport Relief locally. She will be taking part for a third time with her son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren.

She said: “The city council is delighted to host the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile for Norwich and represent the East of England.

“We look forward to an exciting event and if you don’t want to run, you can walk or you can join with friends, family and colleagues to raise funds in different ways - such as dressing as your favourite sports star for a day at work or school. The main thing is to raise funds and have fun.”

One million people are expected to take part in events across the UK. From tiny toddlers to top-notch sports pros, participants can get sponsored to walk, jog, sprint, or even hop, a choice of one, three or six miles.

The Norwich route will be packed full of entertainment and friendly faces with hundreds of people expected to take part. The route will take in the city's finest sights including Norwich Castle and the Guildhall and will finish in the picturesque Chapelfield Gardens.

Jess Kirke, Comic Relief events manager, said: “Make sure you get sponsored to help change lives here in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries. Rope in your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours and go the extra mile for Sport Relief.”
