Lord Mayor's Celebration: 11 - 15 July
Click here for more celebration photos More than 30,000 people turned out to cheer on the floats at the Lord Mayor's Celebrations on Saturday 14 July. The record-breaking numbers - a third more people attended this year's carnival than last year - were coupled with a party atmosphere and high spirits throughout the city centre. Norwich City Council events organiser Helen Selleck said: "The atmosphere over the weekend was fantastic, with everyone in good spirits and no trouble. The weather held throughout the weekend and there were record crowds at all the events. "The procession was the best yet with beautifully crafted floats and a great carnival atmosphere. And thousands of volunteers have created costumes, performed and built floats to help make this a wonderful day." The best float was from Broadland Training Services, and runners up were Bystanders Theatre Group, Bayer Crop Science and BUILD Norwich. The best walking group was Marlpit Massive with Tin House and runners up were Yvonne School of Dance, Anglia Academy Productions and Angel Road Middle School. And the winner of the Carnival Spirit category was a float from PACT animal sanctuary, with runners up NR5 Project, the John Innes Centre and the Open Youth Forum. As well as the tens of thousands at the carnival, 25,000 people had fun at the Chapelfield Gardens fair and the Whiffler theatre attracted 400 people. The outdoor cinema screening of Dirty Dancing at Castle Gardens was very popular, and 150 people watched a bandstand concert. |
