A record 40,000 people turned out for this year’s Lord Mayor’s celebrations in the city, to enjoy a weekend packed with variety.

And people dug deep into their pockets with a staggering £6,374.90 raised for this year's civic charity, the Maritime Volunteer Service, which supports the running of the Norwich City Riverside Lifeboat.

Helen Selleck, events manager at Norwich City Council, said: “It was a incredible weekend. We sold out the comedy and cinema events, and everyone really enjoyed themselves - people were up and dancing at the end of Grease.

“The dragon parade, which was new, was brilliant. It was a strong community project and everyone involved was really enthusiastic and I think that showed.

“The weather on Saturday was fantastic and thousands of people turned out. This year’s parade was really colourful, with lots of different groups taking part.

“Chapelfield was packed in the evening. Monobloco were amazing and the atmosphere was brilliant. Loads of people were getting in to the carnival spirit - it attracted a real mix of people. The fireworks this year really were spectacular, and the flame effects on the castle were dramatic.

“Sunday was great too, despite the rain! The Sewell Park celebrations attracted a lot of people, and there were some great bands on in Chapelfield. People still came and enjoyed themselves even though the weather wasn’t the best.

“I am really pleased with how everything went. With such a variety available, there really was something for everyone. It’s a special way to celebrate the city and I’m looking forward to next year.”

Lord Mayor Cllr Jeremy Hooke, said: “It was an amazing weekend - so many people came, it was mind blowing! It was an exhausting weekend but well worth every second.”
