Norwich Airport - Development

Norwich Airport is on the northern edge of Norwich about 4.5 km from the city centre. The terminal building, most of the facilities and much of the airport lies in our administrative area but the northern part is the responsibility of Broadland District Council.

Norwich Airport

Norwich Airport

In 2003/04 Norwich Airport handled around 460,000 passengers which is 30,000 up on the previous financial year, and there is potential for significant future growth. For example, the terminal building has capacity for 700,000 passengers a year.

The City Council and the County Council are minority shareholders in Norwich Airport Ltd. Omniport plc are the majority shareholder.

Airport agreement

In 1986 and 1988, planning permissions were granted for the development and extension of the airport passenger terminal. These contain conditions relating to issues like aircraft engine testing and time restrictions on the use of the terminal facilities. The planning authorities and the airport entered into a voluntary agreement in 1998 which details procedures for controlling noise at the airport. This was amended in 2000 and is in addition to the conditions agreed in 1986 and 1988. It is called the Norwich Airport Letter of Agreement.
