Parking - on-street parking

The city council is responsible for managing on-street parking in the city. On many streets there is no need to restrict parking. At other locations it can be necessary to prevent parking for safety reasons with, for example, yellow lines. In other circumstances it is necessary to restrict parking to certain users, for example, to help local residents or businesses.

Where can you park on-street in Norwich city centre?

Short stay pay & display parking is available on some city centre streets. The hours of operation, length of stay allowed and parking charges depend upon the location of the parking places within the city centre.

Charges

Charges are operated in these parking places from Monday to Saturday including Bank Holidays, except Christmas Day. Operational hours are between 7.30am and 6.30pm in the city centre retail and commercial core and between 8.00am and 6.00pm in the secondary areas.

In the city centre, charges range from 40p for 15 minutes and in the secondary areas from 20p for 15 minutes. The maximum amount of time you are allowed to stay will be indicated on a sign.

After these times and on Sundays, parking is free of charge but please be aware that in some areas the parking places are dual purpose and are dedicated to Residents Only Parking after the end of the charging period. So please ensure that you read the signs carefully to avoid receiving a parking ticket (Penalty Charge Notice).

Changes to on-street parking

The council considers all requests for changes to on-street parking. Requests for small changes, for example providing yellow lines to protect visibility at a junction are considered by Norwich Highways Agency on an annual basis.

More major changes such as the introduction of permit parking schemes are also considered. At the present time there is on-going work to extend the Northern Controlled Parking Zone.
