Historic buildings
Norwich, the 'Fine city', has many old buildings. Some of these buildings are recognised to be of national importance, and are designated as ‘listed buildings’ or ‘scheduled ancient monuments’, whereas others are of local importance, and have been included within a ‘local list’ compiled by the city council. If a planning application is made that affects any historic building we pay special attention to the potential effect of any proposals on its character, appearance and setting.

Listed buildings
Listed buildings are protected by statute. They have been protected because of their special architectural or historical interest. The lists are compiled by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, and on advice from English Heritage. Buildings on the local list have been identified as being of local importance but are not subject to the same degree of control as statutory listed buildings. Works do not require listed building consent, but the local listing will be taken into consideration when determining planning applications and conservation area consent.

Scheduled ancient monuments
These can either be buildings or structures above or below ground. Examples of scheduled monuments in Norwich include the castle, city walls, Gybson’s Well, Cow Tower and Cringleford Bridge. Applications to carry out work on scheduled ancient monuments are dealt with by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR), acting upon the advice of English Heritage.
