I made the decision to move back to my home town after previously working in the private sector as a sustainability consultant. Norwich is an excellent place to live, with a great mix of busy city life entwined with peaceful open spaces and parks.
The underlying reason I work for the council is to make a difference in a community I have deep connection to. In this respect my aspirations were matched by the council’s and we work well together to make the city a true leader in carbon reduction and sustainability – we’ve even picked up a few national awards along the way!
In addition, the council has a generous annual leave allowance and excellent flexible working arrangements which lets me work in a way which suits my life and allows me to have the time to enjoy my hobbies outside of work. It was not uncommon in my old job to work more than 50 hours a week and this resulted in a poor work/life balance. It is nice to know that the council’s flexible working and special leave policies are available if I need them, especially now that I have a new baby! This may also include a career break to really enjoy being a dad.
My colleagues at the council have a great ‘can-do’ attitude and it’s a pleasure to work with people who genuinely want to do the best they can for a city they love.
