Love Your Local Market

0 Published on Wednesday, 16th May 2018

A celebration of the incredible Norwich Market will take place as part of Love Your Local Market campaign which runs between 17-31 May.

The market will be home to some special guests who will host a variety of activities and promotions over the fortnight.

Norwich Writers’ Circle will be on pop-up stall 15 on Thursday 17 May to promote their fourth annual short story competition which has a markets theme this year. Anthologies of short stories from previous years will be available for sale as well as top tips for budding writers about how to enter this year’s competition to win the cash prizes on offer.

Between Monday 21 and Thursday 24 May students aged between 16-24 years old from the City College Norwich will be running a youth market on pop-up stalls 12-15. They will be advertising their courses, as well as selling items including cakes, sausage rolls and pastries made in the College kitchen and cards and stationery designed and made by the students.

The money raised will go towards the City College Norwich end of year trips.

The youth market will provide a valuable experience for the students and build their confidence talking to the public and handling money.

Norwich in Wonderland will be running a Norwich Market in Wonderland three-day event on 30, 31 May and 1 June. Come and join your favourite characters including the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts and Alice herself on the market from 11am until 3pm each day. There will be a treasure trail around the market with prizes and face painting. Trail sheets will be available from stalls 14 and 15.

As well as being great for children, the free treasure trail is a fantastic opportunity for all to explore the diverse range of goods on offer at Norwich Market from vintage clothing to books, artisan crafts and everyday home essentials plus much more.

After taking part in the activities, visitors can sit, relax and enjoy the amazing range of food and drink available on Norwich Market which includes Spanish, Italian, Indian, Chilean and French inspired street food.

Mark Wright, Norwich Market Traders Association chairman and owner of Taxi Vintage, said: “We are thrilled to be part of the Love Your Local Market celebration again this year and look forward to welcoming people to Norwich Market and showing them what a fantastic place it is to visit.”

Councillor Matthew Packer, Norwich City Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for markets said: "It’s a really exciting time on Norwich Market with amazing new stalls opening throughout the year. The market plays such an important part in attracting visitors to our fine city. I hope this event gives those who have never visited the market before an opportunity to come and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere and wide range of goods on offer.”

Love Your Local Market is a national campaign which runs every year from 17-31 May to celebrate market culture, highlight the importance of markets to their communities and local economies, and encourage entrepreneurship.
