With the ability to get live detailed information, as well as apply online, and with waiting lists shorter than ever – there's never been a better time to get a Norwich allotment.
Far from the perception that there are lengthy waiting lists for allotment plots, there are in fact some sites where plots are available to take on immediately.
This means as well as letting city council residents who may be considering an allotment know that now is a great time to get a plot, the council is now in a position to start accepting applications from people who live outside the Norwich City Council boundary.
Norwich has more than 1900 plots on 18 allotment sites across the city. There are short waiting lists at eleven of these sites, and in some cases, there are plots that are ready and waiting for new plot holders to start cultivating.
To make sure our allotments are fully occupied, the council is giving residents who live outside the city who might not have access to a local allotment the chance to join a city waiting list and enjoy the growing experience. People who live in Norwich will continue to enjoy a subsidised rate of £38.75 for a standard plot, whereas out-of-city residents will pay an additional fee, bringing their annual rate up to £48.75.
The application process will be open to out-of-city residents until there is a change in the demand for plots. Should a waiting list exceed one applicant for every five available plots, then the waiting list may be closed to out-of-city residents.
Councillor Paul Kendrick, cabinet member for parks, markets and open spaces said: “Tending to an allotment is an excellent way to grow your own produce and spend time out in the open, on your own or with the family, which is why it is such a popular hobby.
“Autumn is a great time of year to start cultivating in readiness for the spring, and we are pleased to be able to extend the invitation to apply for a plot to even more green-fingered enthusiasts.”
