Count assistant (night) job description

Purpose

Working as part of a team to sort and count ballot papers quickly but accurately whilst under pressure and under observation of candidates and agents.

Principal duties:

  • Work in a team as designated by the returning officer
  • Verify and count the number of ballot papers in a ballot box and recount if required
  • Alert the verification and count table supervisors to any doubtful papers as instructed
  • Sort the ballot papers into votes for individual candidates using the method designated by the returning officer
  • Counting of ballot papers and recount if required
  • Refrain from engaging in conversations with candidates, agents or guests
  • Any other count assistant related duties as required

Hours

There is no night count work currently scheduled for the 2024 Local Election, however this would change if a general election is called.

Hours if a general election is called: Thursday 2 May 9pm – late.

Rate of pay

£21 per hour (night rate).
