Jump aboard for oceans of fun – St Georges play area reopens

St georges play area Published on Tuesday, 10th October 2023

Children can jump aboard to enjoy the ocean waves as a much-loved inner-city children’s play park reopens after a comprehensive refit.

The design for St Georges play area, which is situated opposite Norwich Playhouse, was chosen by popular consent after more than 400 people responded to a survey on Norwich City Council’s Get Talking consultation and engagement website to vote on the upgrade at the park.

The refit, which was completed ahead of schedule, included replacing the previous equipment, flooring and fencing, with an ocean theme winning through.

Well-loved by children of all ages but used most by pre-schoolers, it now features a ship play unit with a slide and climbing features, swings, stepping stones, a giant shark, talk tubes, a carousel, play panels and seating.

The refurbishment was paid for from funds where housing developers make provision for community facilities such as open spaces and access roads.

Norwich City Councillor Adam Giles, cabinet member for communities and social inclusion, said:

“We’re delighted the St Georges play area is now fully open again for everyone in the local community to explore and enjoy. Our thanks go to the children, parents, carers and other family members who took part in the public consultation and responded in large numbers with detailed feedback to help choose such a colourful, accessible and engaging design. Encouragement to use their imaginations is such a vital component in young children’s development and we hope families will make full use of the new equipment.”
