Apprenticeships – an invaluable contribution to the work of the council

Published on Friday, 2nd February 2024

Norwich City Council is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2024 next week, from February 5-11.

This is the 17th annual week-long celebration which brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

The city council prioritises investing in talent through apprenticeships, recognising the benefit of offering entry level roles to help those starting out in their careers to develop knowledge and experience within a local government setting, while as an employer building a workforce with future-ready skills in the local area.

Since 2018, the council has provided 27 apprenticeships - 15 have completed their courses, with 12 still completing their studies.  There are a wide range of apprenticeship courses across all directorates, and the council is liaising with local schools to build relationships and promote local government working.

Councillor Mike Stonard, leader of Norwich City Council said:

“The contribution our apprentices make to the work of the council is invaluable and our apprenticeship programme is an integral part of how we operate at City Hall. It not only offers opportunities for younger people to join the council at the start of their careers, but it is also a way for established members of staff to retrain in other areas.”

One of the council’s current apprentices is Viktoriia Moskalenko who is currently completing her apprenticeship in Software Development Level 3. She said: “I am grateful for the opportunity to study on the apprenticeship programme. The training provider is always ready to help, and I enjoy being able to work with my team on different projects and to be able to use different technologies. The apprenticeship also allows me to easily apply my knowledge in practice, and I can always ask for support or advice from my manager and colleagues.”
