When attending functions the civic heads may wear their chains of office either with their robes or formal dress. Sometimes, for reasons of practicality, civic badges are worn in preference to chains.
The Lord Mayor wears a formal black and gold robe on highly ceremonial occasions. A less formal red robe is worn when visiting schools, hospitals and similar groups.
The Sheriff has a purple robe.
On formal black tie occasions, a civic badge will replace the chains of office.
