How to address the Lord Mayor and Sheriff

The Lord Mayor

At all times while wearing the chains or badge

  • The Lord Mayor will be addressed as Lord Mayor.
  • Traditionally female Lord Mayors are addressed as Lord Mayor.

In correspondence

  • The Lord Mayor will be addressed as The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor James Wright.
  • A letter would start with My Dear Lord Mayor. Add either and Lady Mayoress or Lord Mayor's Consort where relevant.

In person

When formally greeting the Lord Mayor: My Lord Mayor

In speeches

  • The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor James Wright and either Lady Mayoress or Lord Mayor's Consort.
  • At the commencement of a speech My Lord Mayor and either Lady Mayoress or Lord Mayor's Consort.

The Sheriff

In correspondence

  • The Sheriff will be addressed as The Worshipful the Sheriff of Norwich, Dr Jan Sheldon.
  • A letter would start with Dear Sheriff.  Add the words and Sheriff’s Consort if writing to both.

In person

When formally greeting the Sheriff it is correct to say My Sheriff.

In speeches

  • The Worshipful the Sheriff of Norwich, Dr Jan Sheldon and the Sheriff’s Consort.
  • At the commencement of a speech My Sheriff, Sheriff’s Consort.
