Roll Up, Roll Up … Explore the cities latest urban art gems

Through a partnership between Norwich BID and the city council, 12 market stalls have been transformed into vibrant street art for residents, visitors and market vendors to enjoy.

Norwich is already home to eight eye catching large-scale street murals and now the Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) has unveiled its latest urban artworks.

This collaborative project engaged with five community groups including Notre Dame School, Free School Norwich, The Norwich School, Open Youth Trust and Norwich Theatre Royal to help transform the market.  Ideas were brought to life by seven artists (Kieran Harper, Amy Fellows, Lucie Knight, Emma Hulett, Katie Nice & Maisie Moffat, Ralph McCarthy and Joey LaMeche) who ran workshops with each of the groups to understand their artistic briefs.

Voted as Britain’s Best Large Outdoor Market 2019 (National Association of British Market Authorities), Norwich Market is packed full of history and stories making it a must-see destination in the city centre. To celebrate this fantastic achievement, Norwich BID are proud to unveil a series of 12 murals that highlight the past, present and future of Norwich.

As one of the largest and oldest open-air markets in the country, the Norwich Market murals celebrate the city’s rich heritage and culture, focusing on Norwich: Past, Present and Future, to bring stories of the city and the market to life. The murals give a glimpse of circus life and Pablo Fanque, the Iceni, everyday life in Norwich along with strong iconic Norwich females.

The closed shutters provide a doorway to a different time, allowing visitors to view an alternative side and interpretation of Norwich.  Immersive and interactive, the murals bring an energy and sense of discovery to Norwich’s iconic market.

The 12 market sites compliment the wider Norwich BID urban art project which sees the city come to life with large scale murals across eight sites.

Stefan Gurney, executive director at the BID said, “Following the success of our other urban art projects this is a fantastic way to celebrate the market and showcase the amazing local creative talent.  Norwich is the City of Stories and it’s great to see some of the cities fantastic stories displayed through creative artistic interpretation. The market is an iconic landmark and visitor attraction and we look forward to seeing visitors enjoy the new works of art as they browse the great range of stalls.”
