More than two thousand households in Norwich have seen their 2020/21 Council Tax bills reduced to zero, with a further 1,200 plus, set to follow.
Towards the end of March, the government announced funding to councils to pass onto people who already receive support with their Council Tax, recommending they take a further £150 off their 2020/21 bills.
Leader of Norwich City Council, Councillor Alan Waters gave the very welcome news to the city via video <link to video from Alan Waters> that in Norwich, even more was to be done. He said that those who were eligible for help would have their bills for 2020/21 reduced to zero and that this wouldn’t just be the case for people of working age, but also those of pension age too.
Since this time a total of 2,191 households have benefited, with a further 1,229 due to follow suit.
Councillor Waters said:
“Protecting the most vulnerable is our absolute priority, which is why we’re one of the few cities that has fiercely guarded a 100 per cent Council Tax reduction scheme – meaning those who need support are exempt from paying.
This has been, and continues to be, an incredibly difficult time for everyone. The way the city has responded to the call to stay home, to adapt services to meet changing demands, make sure people have the food and medicines they need, is truly remarkable.
