New faces on Norwich City Council’s cabinet

Published on Friday, 30th July 2021

A focus on the environment is at the heart of the decision to increase the number of cabinet members at the council from eight to nine, allowing for added attention on climate change.

Councillor Emma Hampton, elected to University ward, will become cabinet member for climate change and digital inclusion; Councillor Catherine Oliver, elected to Town Close ward, will become cabinet member for environmental services.

Leader of the council, Councillor Alan Waters, said: “Following the recent elections the city council’s cabinet takes on a fresh look with two new councillors who will strengthen our number of cabinet members and work alongside experienced colleagues.

“Cllr Hampton’s role is an exciting one and reflects the priority the council is giving to climate change through introducing an additional cabinet role to focus on this vital issue, allowing us to build on existing achievements such as our award-winning carbon reduction programme.

“I’m also delighted to welcome Cllr Oliver on board who will be leading on environmental services and overseeing vital services to residents such as waste and recycling and our rough sleeping strategy.”

Former cabinet member for safe city environment, Councillor Maguire, has taken up the role of Lord Mayor of Norwich, meaning he is no longer able to serve on cabinet.

The new cabinet and their portfolios are:

•    Councillor Alan Waters – leader of the council
•    Councillor Gail Harris – deputy council leader and social housing
