All invited to vibrant city celebration

Published on Friday, 10th June 2022

A colourful parade and service to celebrate the start of the civic year will recognise the roles of civic heads, local community leaders and volunteers on Sunday 12 June.

Residents across Norwich are invited to attend this traditional occasion, which begins at 3pm at the front of City Hall, in honour of the new Lord Mayor, Councillor Dr Kevin Maguire, and Sheriff, Caroline Jarrold of Norwich, who have been elected to serve for a second civic year. The new civic heads and invited guests will congregate on the pavement outside City Hall before passing through the city.

Rooted in historic pageantry, the procession of dignitaries dressed in traditional gowns, robes and prestigious regalia will create a spectacle in the city centre as they make their way to the City Service, held at Norwich Cathedral.

Joined by representatives from organisations such as the University of East Anglia, Norwich University of the Arts and City College Norwich, as well as community leaders and volunteers, the civic procession will move along St Peters Street, towards Gaol Hill where it will be joined by the Norwich Whifflers and Snap the Dragon.

Together this impressive group will process along London Street, Bank Plain, Queen Street, then enter Epringham Gate into the grounds of Norwich Cathedral for a service led by the acting Dean of Norwich Cathedral, The Revd Dr Peter Doll, Canon Librarian and Vice Dean, to start at 3:30pm.

Steeped in history, the service will formally welcome the new civics before a congregation made up of people representing the wider community.

All are welcome to enjoy the procession and church service, which promises to be a spectacular event.

Road closures

The route of the parade is from City Hall, Gaol Hill, London Street, Queens Street and Norwich Cathedral. The roads will be closed as the parade approaches by security as a rolling road closure between 3pm – 3.30pm.
