Providing new affordable homes for Norwich residents is at the top of the agenda for Norwich City Council.

The council submitted a planning application for over 60 new affordable homes on February 7th.  All the homes will be built to high eco-efficient standards on the site of the former municipal works depot in Mile Cross.

If approved the proposed development will help to meet housing needs in the Mile Cross area of the city. It would also build on the council’s century-long legacy of proudly providing affordable homes for city residents.

This initiative, which is subject to planning approval, puts people at the forefront, aiming to create a welcoming community environment with dozens of modern, eco-friendly homes tailored for social rent. It also reflects a deep-rooted dedication to enhancing the lives of individuals and families in Mile Cross, ensuring they have access to safe and sustainable homes.

Councillor Beth Jones, deputy leader, and cabinet member for housing and community safety, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "I am proud that we are submitting this exciting and innovative application, as I am acutely aware that there is a shortage of affordable, good quality homes across the city for our residents. Norwich City Council hopes to bring new, sustainable homes to Mile Cross, just as we have recently delivered in Bowthorpe. This proposal not only supports our housing strategy but also incorporates key elements of inclusivity, wellbeing, green living, and community cohesion."

“Although we have engaged with local residents about these proposals, I’d encourage people to make their views known on the planning application and I look forward to it being reported through to Planning Applications Committee for a decision in due course.
