Two of Norwich’s most loved skateparks – Heartsease Recreation Ground and Eaton Park – are set for a major refresh, with exciting new designs unveiled today by Norwich City Council.
In collaboration with leading skatepark designers Betongpark, these upgraded spaces are being developed to better serve the city’s growing community of skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter users, roller skaters, and WCMX (Wheelchair Motocross) athletes, offering fresh challenges and inclusive design features for all abilities.
Councillor Emma Hampton, Norwich City Council’s cabinet member for parks and open spaces said: “These upgrades are about more than just new ramps and rails — they reflect our commitment to building a healthier, more inclusive, and connected Norwich.
“By creating accessible, creative spaces shaped by the community, we’re supporting active lifestyles, strengthening social ties, and making smart use of investment to deliver long-term value for residents.”
Heartsease: a unique mini ramp and roller-skating zone
Drawing inspiration from the site's original concrete bowl, the proposed design for Heartsease introduces a quirky mini ramp with smooth, rounded concrete pool coping – a first for Norwich. This feature not only enhances performance but also adds a distinctive character to the park.
The mini ramp flows into a dedicated roller-skating area, making the space more accessible and inviting for users of all wheels. With a low, flowing layout, this design caters to beginners while remaining engaging for seasoned riders. The proposed use of coloured concrete will further highlight the skate area, helping it stand out as a vibrant hub within the park.
Eaton Park: a New plaza-style extension
At Eaton Park, the planned extension introduces a plaza-style area designed with direct input from local riders. The new section connects seamlessly to the existing park via a small bank, allowing smooth transitions between areas and encouraging continuous flow.
Created for skateboarding, scooting, rollerblading, BMX, and WCMX, this inclusive space introduces new terrain not currently available at the park, offering fresh challenges and ensuring that all skill levels are welcomed and supported.
