Norwich City Council is set to mark the Battle of Britain, paying tribute to the Royal Air Force pilots whose heroics are often regarded as the “turning point” in World War II.

Members of the public and the media are invited to join the Lord Mayor, Sheriff, veterans, and other distinguished guests for a wreath laying ceremony on Monday 15 September 2025. The event will take place from 11:15am - 12:15pm at the Norwich War Memorial in front of City Hall.

Nearly 3,000 RAF aircrew, later known as “the Few”, took part in the Battle of Britain in 1940. While other days saw heavier fighting and losses, 15 September stands out as the only day when two large daylight raids were launched against London. RAF fighters met these attacks decisively, with the Luftwaffe losing around 60 aircraft and suffering a major blow to morale.

This commemoration is also a time to remember the sacrifices of those currently serving and their families, as well as civilians affected by ongoing conflicts.

The Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor Paul Kendrick said:

“We are honoured to mark the bravery and sacrifice of ‘the Few’ who played such a vital role in the Battle of Britain. Their courage changed the course of history, and their legacy continues to inspire us today. This commemoration is both a tribute to their heroism and a moment to reflect on the strength and dedication of all those who serve in our armed forces, past and present, along with the families who support them. It is a time for us to come together in gratitude and respect.”

Road closure

St Peters Street and Bethel Street, from where it joins St Peters Street up to The Forum car park (access to the car park will be maintained during this time), will be closed from 10:45am until 12:30pm.
