We are pleased to announce that the first phase in developing 67 brand-new council homes on the former Mile Cross depot site was approved at cabinet on Wednesday 10 September.
This marks a significant step forward in the transformation of the Mile Cross site, which has been vacant since 2017. The first phase of the new development will deliver 67 council homes for rent, which have been designed to provide much needed housing to local residents.
Councillor Beth Jones, Cabinet Member for Housing said, “This is a vital project for Norwich and in particular Mile Cross, and I am incredibly pleased to be progressing the next stage of delivering essential homes that our residents truly need on this site. This continues our commitment as a council to delivering more sustainable, high-quality, affordable housing for our communities.”
The total budget for this development is £20.5 million which is being funded by the housing revenue account. The council will now be developing the design and build for this programme of work and are inviting contractors to tender for the construction of these much-needed homes. Building works are expected to begin next year.
This first phase is part of a wider three-part regeneration scheme for the area, which are anticipated to deliver approximately 170 homes overall. Features for the new houses will include air source heat pumps, solar panels, and thoughtful interior design to help tackle fuel and furniture poverty. The development will also include green spaces, a play area, and improved connectivity to the city via Marriot’s Way.
The development will be delivered under industry-standard agreements to ensure quality and value for money.
As part of the pre-construction phase, we have already appointed Ovamill who will begin the ground works for essential utilities and road infrastructure which will start before the end of the month.
We will also try to award contracts to local suppliers wherever possible, so that this project will also support local jobs and boost the local economy.
This is a key step in delivering the council’s community-led plan, ‘We are Norwich’ and we look forward to working with our partners and residents to bring this vibrant new neighbourhood to life.
