Norwich City Council and Sustrans are pleased to announce that improvement works are underway at Lakenham Way.
This follows the publication of Sustrans’ Greenway Management Plan (GMP), which was developed in response to last year’s community consultation. Lakenham Way is managed by Sustrans.
The GMP is a 10-year vision shaped by feedback from over 220 residents and local groups, with key priorities identified around safety, accessibility, and environmental enhancement.
The GMP identified some short-term improvements that are expected to be completed by the end of this year. Vegetation and tree management works have started to restore the full width of the path and improve the effectiveness of the lighting. At the end of September, further work will start to provide seating, improve steps at Hall Road, install litter bins, and informative welcome signs that reflect the railway heritage. The 2025 improvement work is being managed by Norwich City Council and delivered by Norwich City Services Ltd
Improved wayfinding to highlight the yellow pedalway route between the city centre and Old Hall Road will also be provided. Lakenham Way is the highlight of the yellow pedalway. This element of the project will be managed by Norfolk County Council and delivered by Norse.
Access to Lakenham Way will be maintained throughout, although brief disruptions may occur during specific activities such as vegetation clearance. These will be timed to avoid busy periods.
Environmental surveys have been completed, and NCSL will follow guidance from ecologists and arboriculturists to ensure the protection of local wildlife, including safeguarding the resident lizard population.
Cllr Emma Hampton, cabinet member for climate change and environment, said:
“Lakenham Way is a much-loved green corridor and an important active travel route. These improvements reflect what the community told us they wanted - safer, more accessible spaces that support both people and nature. I’m delighted to see the work underway and look forward to seeing the benefits it brings to residents and visitors.”
Rosalind Bacon, Network Development Manager, East of England at Sustrans, said:
“This project is a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration. By working closely with Norwich City Council, Norfolk County Council, and the local community, we’re turning shared priorities into real improvements. Lakenham Way is a key part of the National Cycle Network, and these enhancements will help ensure it remains a safe, accessible and welcoming space for everyone who uses it.”
Further updates will be shared via social media and on-site posters ahead of the main works starting at the end of September 2025.
