How to dispose of paint and other dangerous waste

Paint, chemicals and other hazardous items need to be disposed of carefully to protect people and the environment. Before throwing anything away, see if it can be reused or shared. If not, follow the guidance below to dispose of it safely and responsibly.

If your paint is still good, try giving it to a friend or offering it on websites like Freegle or Gumtree

If you can’t give it away:

  • take the lid of
  • let the paint dry out (you can add cat litter to help)
  • once dry, put the can in your general waste bin

Every autumn, there are special days where you can take dangerous waste to a recycling centre for free. Check the Norfolk County Council website for dates.
