Community grants programme

About Get Involved grants

Tiered grants of £50, £300 and £500 are available to community groups or groups of residents who would like to undertake small projects or activities that support people getting involved in their neighbourhood.

Full details of each grant and its criteria are available on this page or you can contact the community enabling team for advice at community@norwich.gov.uk

There are no deadlines for applications. You can submit your proposal at any time during the year and we aim to assess them within 4-6 weeks where we can.

Successful applicants are required to acknowledge the support of Norwich City Council on any publicity materials and to complete an end of project report.

Get Together grants

For small groups

If you are a newly formed group of at least three residents, you can receive funding to:

  • organize a neighbourhood meet-up about a local issue
  • canvass neighbours to join a new community group
  • host an event or activity to bring people together.

The community enabling team can make purchases up to £50 on your behalf, covering costs like venue hire, refreshments and road closures for events.

Get Together grants are available as a one-off award to a group. A second grant would only be considered for a new and separate project.

In addition to the £50 funding, we can also help you borrow equipment like gazebos, games, and flip charts. Check the Lumi website for available items.

How to apply

No formal application is needed. Simply email community@norwich.gov.uk, and an officer will visit to discuss how we can support you.

Get Started grants

This funding is to support the growth of new groups who have identified an issue they would like to tackle in their local area. This might be setting up a youth group, a Friends group for a park, or any sort of group which brings a positive benefit to Norwich and its neighbourhoods.

What you will need to show that:

  • there are at least three residents who want to set the group up
  • you have considered what you want to achieve and why it’s needed
  • you plan to operate in Norwich city boundaries
  • you have thought about how to keep your activities safe, legal and well managed

At application stage, we do not expect you will have every policy and document you need. The officer who assesses your application will give you a detailed idea of which policies you will need and can support you to develop these. You will also need a bank account in the name of your new group for the funding to be paid into, but you do not need to have this in place before you apply.

If successful your group will be awarded a £300 start-up grant for your first 12 months to help you develop your group and can cover costs such as:

  • insurance
  • room hire
  • equipment
  • transport
  • marketing
  • training

You do not need to specify what you plan to spend the grant on in this form but if you have some ideas, you can let us know. You will have to report on how the money was spent at the end of the 12 months so we can see how it was used.

If your 12 month report shows that you have used this start-up grant well and made a difference to your local area, you may be invited to apply for a further £500 for a specific project you would like to undertake.

The application will give you more information on how to ask for support and what information you need to provide.

Get Growing grants

For groups who are awarded a Get Started grant as a new group, Get Growing grants offer follow up funding.

This funding is by invite only and is not open to applications outside this.

Groups who demonstrate that they have used their start-up funding well over their first 12-18 months are invited to apply for up to £500 to run a project which they think will bring further benefit to their local area.

What you will need to show in that application is that:

  • you have identified a need for your follow-on project
  • you have considered what you want to achieve and how you’ll evaluate it
  • you have learned how to keep your activities safe, legal and well-managed

This grant provides up to £500 grant to run a project (not core or ongoing costs) which reflects your group’s aims and objectives. You will need to supply a budget for the project.

Items which can be purchased include (but are not limited to):

  • volunteer training
  • equipment costs
  • resources such as plants or craft consumables
