Waste collection service standards

Our waste collection service standards explain what you can expect from us and our expectations of you, so we can work together to provide the best possible waste collection service for our community. and they also set out our expectations of you,

Household collection frequencies

  • Blue bin (mixed recycling): every other week.
  • Black bin (general rubbish): every other week.
  • Food waste: every week.
  • Black sack (general rubbish): every week.
  • Blue sack (recycling): every other week.
  • Garden waste: every other week.

Communal bin collection frequencies

  • Recycling: every other week.
  • General rubbish: every other week.
  • Food waste: every week.

Collection days and times

  • Bins must be presented by 6am on collection day.
  • Bins must not be placed out before 6pm the evening prior.

Presentation and return points

  • Present bins at the roadside or in designated communal bin stores.
  • Collection crews will return bins upright to the presentation point after emptying.

Non-collection criteria

Bins may not be collected if:

  • the wrong waste type is placed in the container
  • recycling is contaminated
  • bins are overfilled or too heavy
  • bins are placed out late or in the wrong location
  • there are access issues (blocked entry, vehicles, locked gates, etc.)

A tag or notice will be left explaining the reason for non-collection.

Resident responsibilities

  • Use the correct containers for each waste type.
  • Ensure bin lids are fully closed.
  • Keep recycling clean and dry.
  • Present bins by 6am on the scheduled day.
  • Ensure access routes are clear.
  • Report access issues such as blocked entry or loose pets.

Operational commitments

  • Crews aim to empty all bins on their scheduled collection day.
  • Spillages will be cleared by crews.
  • Non-collections are recorded.
  • Missed collections reported within 48 hours will be collected on the next working day.

Assisted collections

  • Available for residents who are unable to move bins due to mobility or health issues.
  • Eligibility and applications are managed by the council.

Additional capacity

  • Larger households and houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) may apply for larger bins if needed.
  • Clinical waste collections are available for eligible residents upon request.

Replacement bins

  • All replacement bins (including stolen, missing, or damaged bins) are chargeable.
  • Delivery is normally within 10 working days.
