What you need to know
- You must have an environmental permit before starting any regulated activity.
- Applications are made either to your local council or the Environment Agency, depending on the type of activity.
- Your application may be reviewed by other organisations and the public.
- Once granted, permit details are added to a public register.
- You can request confidentiality for commercial or national security reasons.

Fees and processing
- You must pay a one-off fee when you apply.
- If your permit is approved, you’ll also need to pay a yearly subsistence charge.
- Applications are processed within 14 days of receiving payment.
- A decision is made within four months. If your application is refused, you will be told and can appeal.
