What you need to know
- businesses must check for asbestos and remove or treat it if needed
- if you're unsure what to do, contact your enforcing authority

Important rules
- use a licensed contractor for most asbestos work
- the contractor must:
- notify the council before starting
- get approval for their work plan.
- for low-risk materials (like asbestos cement), licensed contractors aren’t required—but they must:
- do a risk assessment
- follow safety procedures.
Disposal
- all asbestos waste must go to a licensed disposal site or be handled by a licensed contractor
