Report an accident

When you must report an accident at work, and how to report it.

Reporting an accident at work (RIDDOR)

By law, some work-related incidents must be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). This helps them understand risks and decide if they need to investigate.

What must be reported

You must report if:

  • someone dies at work (including from violence)
  • an employee is seriously injured, like
    • broken bones (not fingers or toes)
    • dislocations
    • amputations
    • serious burns
  • an employee can’t work for more than 7 days (not counting the day of the accident). You must report this within 15 days
  • a member of the public is hurt and taken straight to hospital
  • a dangerous incident happens, even if no one is hurt (e.g. equipment failure, gas leak)
  • an employee gets a work-related disease, like asthma or carpal tunnel syndrome.
