Support for armed forces personnel

The Armed Forces Covenant

The Armed Forces Covenant is a voluntary statement of mutual support between a civilian community and the local armed forces community. It is a promise by the nation to ensure that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

As an equal opportunity employer, we recognise the Armed Forces Covenant to show our continued support and appreciation to those who have served - it is our commitment to ensure they will not face a disadvantage when accessing our services or seeking employment. This assistance extends beyond those still serving in the armed forces and is available to reserve units, veterans, military families, and their dependants.

In 2022, Norwich City Council was reaccredited with a Silver Award from the Ministry of Defence for recognition for the work that we do to support the Armed Forces, and how we implement the covenant into our employment practices.

To help ensure employee awareness of the benefits realised through the council’s participation in the Armed Forces Covenant recognition scheme, Norwich City Council offers several online training courses. These courses help our front-line workers and those responsible for managing our services, to apply the principles of the covenant through the services we provide, such as housing and homelessness support.
