Employment support for armed forces personnel

Norwich City Council is proud to be an Armed Forces Covenant employer. As such, when a veteran or ex-member of the armed forces applies for a role and they meet the criteria for the role, they will be invited for interview regardless of their employment history.

We offer our employees a competitive pay and benefits package and are proud to be a registered member of the Disability Confident employer scheme, in addition to holding real Living Wage accreditation.

Whether someone is looking for a new career, promotion, flexible working opportunity to fit with your home life or a sideways move – we have a variety of employment opportunities for everybody.

Here are some of the benefits of working at Norwich City Council:

  • All employees are eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).
  • Paid holiday entitlement starts at 26 days per annum and increases with length of service to a maximum of 33 days per annum. This is pro rata for part-time employees.
  • In addition to the statutory public holidays, we grant an additional statutory day leave at Christmas.
  • Norwich City Council supports its employees through the provision of occupational health and employee assistance support.

Special Leave

Norwich City Council is proud to be an Armed Forces Covenant employer. As such, when a veteran or ex-member of the armed forces applies for a role and they meet the criteria for the role, they will be invited for interview regardless of their employment history.
As well as our range of Special Leave options, such as compassionate leave, emergency dependants leave, or parental leave, we also support the armed forces within this policy. For example:

  • Volunteer members of the Non-Regular Forces are to be granted 2 weeks paid leave to attend summer camp.
  • If any members of the Territorial Army are required to attend additional training, which they are unable to attend outside normal working hours, they should be granted additional paid leave.

Paid time off in these circumstances is to be paid at the rate normally paid for annual leave.

Flexible working

With the UK workforce becoming increasingly diverse, the introduction of hybrid working, and more people requesting to work from home where possible, we offer our employees flexible working options to explore when and where the business allows.

A simple change to working hours or arrangements, even on a trial basis, can improve work-life balance and allow colleagues working at the council to deal better with out of work commitments such as their family arrangements or even have a positive impact on their health.

Wellbeing Programme

We can only imagine the psychological and emotional effect that service in the armed forces could entail, and it is important for Norwich City Council to protect the well-being of all our employees.

Norwich City’s Council’s health provider, Vita, offers an excellent employee assistance programme accessible to all Norwich City Council Employees. There is a wide range of health and wellbeing support tools available, such as a 24/7 confidential helpline for counselling and mental health assistance.
