Apply for a personal licence

A personal licence lets you be the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) at a place that sells or supplies alcohol.

Who can apply

You must:

  • be 18 or older
  • have a licensing qualification
  • not have had a personal licence taken away in the last 5 years
  • tell us about any criminal convictions

What you need to apply

Upload these documents with your application:

  • a criminal record check (dated within the last month)
  • two passport-style photos (one signed by a professional to confirm it’s you)
  • your licensing qualification certificate
  • proof of your right to work in the UK

Fee

The application costs £37 (non-refundable)

What happens next

  • We’ll notify the police and Home Office.

They have 14 days to object. If there are no objections and you meet the requirements, your licence will be granted.

Update your licence details

If you change your name or address, you must:

  • contact the council that issued your licence
  • return both your paper licence and plastic card
  • if you can’t return them, explain why

It’s a criminal offence not to keep your licence details up to date.

Fee for Changes

  • £10.50 for a replacement licence
