Norwich City Council shortlisted for prestigious environmental award

Published on Monday, 4th May 2020

Norwich City Council’s impressive work in the environmental field has been recognised by The Global Good Awards.

The city council is one of just three entrants shortlisted in the ‘Climate Action of the Year’ category – which focuses on success stories of those with effective carbon reduction programmes. The city council also has the proud boast of being the only local authority to have been shortlisted across all categories at this year’s awards.

Key achievements noted in the city council’s award entry includes details about it setting up a carbon management programme in 2007. Since then it has made impressive strides through a number of steps including decarbonising emissions, investing in renewable energy and retrofitting its various buildings to increase energy efficiency.

Through these steps and others, the council’s emissions have fallen by 59.6 per cent since the 2007 baseline. Meanwhile, the work of the popular One Planet Norwich campaign has supported the whole city in cutting general emissions by 45 per cent, on average.

This shortlisting is the latest recognition for the city council’s environmental agenda; including an Edie Carbon Reduction award, Energy Manager of the Year from ESTA, and a number of energy efficiency awards. The council’s Passivhaus social housing scheme at Goldsmith Street also won the prestigious Stirling Prize last year.

Councillor Kevin Maguire, cabinet member for safe and sustainable city environment at Norwich City Council, said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this award.

“Maintaining a liveable city is one of the key priorities of our Norwich 2040 City Vision, and we are very proud to have made so much progress in this regard.”
