Before you start any work on a tree you must
- check if your tree is protected
- get advice from a qualified tree surgeon or arborist before doing any work
- if your tree has a TPO, you need to apply for permission (you will receive a decision within 8 weeks)
- if your tree is in a conservation area, you need to notify the council (you will receive a decision within 6 weeks)
The council doesn’t offer advice before you apply, but the Arboricultural Association can help you find a qualified tree expert.
When you don’t need permission
You don’t need permission if:
• the tree is dead or dangerous (you must prove this if asked)
• you are only removing dead wood from a healthy tree
In urgent cases, tell the council as soon as possible. Otherwise, give at least 5 days’ notice before starting work.
