Councillors allowances

Norwich City councillors play a vital role in representing our community, and their work involves time, effort, and personal costs. To support them in their duties, the council provides a structured allowance system.

What do councillors receive?

All councillors are entitled to a basic allowance, which helps cover everyday expenses like:

  • phone bills
  • postage
  • printer cartridges

This allowance also acknowledges the time they dedicate to council responsibilities.

Additional support

To ensure councillors can fully participate in meetings and official duties, the council also offers:

  • travel expense reimbursements
  • carer support allowances – helping those with caring responsibilities attend council business

Special Responsibility Allowance (SRA)

Councillors who take on extra responsibilities - such as chairing committees or leading specific initiatives - receive an SRA to reflect the additional time and commitment required.

Transparency matters

We believe in open governance. That’s why we publish a detailed breakdown of allowances paid to each councillor every year. You can explore past and current figures here:

The full scheme - including how allowances are calculated - is outlined in the Members' Allowance Scheme in the council’s Constitution (page 259).
