Provides strategic leadership for the council’s workforce, culture, and organisational capability. The role shapes and delivers a progressive people strategy that enables the council to achieve its corporate priorities through its people.

Ensures the council attracts, develops, and retains a skilled, engaged, and diverse workforce; fosters a positive, inclusive culture; and drives modern, efficient, values-led people management practices.

Key responsibilities

As Director of People, provides strategic leadership and direction for the council’s workforce and culture, ensuring people are at the heart of delivering excellent services to the community.

  • Provides strategic leadership on all workforce and organisational matters, ensuring people policies and practices enable delivery of the council’s corporate priorities.
  • Champions organisational culture and development, fostering inclusive leadership, engagement, and continuous improvement across all services.
  • Lead workforce planning, talent, and capability development, ensuring the council has the skills, flexibility, and capacity to meet current and future needs.
  • Oversee employee relations, pay, and policy frameworks that promote fairness, equality, and effective partnership working with trade unions.
  • Drive wellbeing, equality, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring the council remains a modern, values-led, and high-performing employer of choice.
