Rosary cemetery offers a peaceful and respectful setting for burials. Managed by the Council, the cemetery provides a range of options to accommodate different beliefs, traditions, and family wishes - ensuring every farewell is meaningful and dignified.
Located on Rosary Road in Norwich, Rosary Cemetery is a site of national significance as England’s first non-denominational cemetery.
Established in 1821 by nonconformist minister Thomas Drummond, it was created to offer a dignified resting place for individuals of any faith or none, at a time when burial grounds were typically restricted to Church of England rites.
The cemetery was officially licensed for burials by the Bishop of Norwich, and the first interment was that of Drummond’s own wife. This marked the beginning of a new, inclusive approach to burial practices in England.
Rosary Cemetery remains a peaceful and reflective space, rich in Victorian funerary architecture, mature trees, and wildlife. It is now a Grade II listed site*, recognised for its historical, cultural, and ecological value.
There is still space available for burials at Rosary Cemetery.
Please note that restrictions apply to the types of memorials permitted, in keeping with the character and regulations of the site.
We do not offer the option to purchase plots in reserve. All plots are allocated at the time of need, ensuring fair and timely access for families.
In addition to full burials, we also offer cremation plots in Section Z, providing a respectful and flexible option for those choosing cremation.
We are unable to offer a service in the Rosary Chapel at this time.
