Rosary Cemetery – A historic place of rest for all
Located on Rosary Road in Norwich, Rosary Cemetery is a site of national significance as England’s first non-denominational cemetery.
Established in 1821 by nonconformist minister Thomas Drummond, it was created to offer a dignified resting place for individuals of any faith or none, at a time when burial grounds were typically restricted to Church of England rites.
The cemetery was officially licensed for burials by the Bishop of Norwich, and the first interment was that of Drummond’s own wife. This marked the beginning of a new, inclusive approach to burial practices in England.
Rosary Cemetery remains a peaceful and reflective space, rich in Victorian funerary architecture, mature trees, and wildlife. It is now a Grade II listed site*, recognised for its historical, cultural, and ecological value.
