Surface water flooding (also called flash flooding) can happen anywhere — even if you don’t live in a flood risk area. It usually occurs when heavy rain overwhelms drains, causing water to build up and potentially enter homes and streets.

How to stay safe and prepared
Stay informed
- check weather forecasts and warnings from the Met Office.
- warnings come in four levels — green (no severe weather), yellow (be aware), amber (be prepared) and red (take action).
Plan ahead
- know if your property is at risk by checking with the Environment Agency
- sign up for flood alerts via Floodline Warnings Direct
- prepare a household emergency plan and a “grab bag” with essentials
- consider flood protection products like barriers or covers.
Protect your property
- keep drains clear of debris
- move valuable items to higher ground
- take photos of your belongings for insurance purposes.
Insurance
- make sure your home and contents are covered for flood damage
- store insurance documents safely and keep them in your emergency kit.
During a flood
- listen to local radio or check online for updates
- avoid driving through floodwater
- follow advice from emergency services.
